Electricity, More Than Just Power

Electricity is a crucial thing for many of us to have. It powers and charges are cellular phones, personal computers, microwaves, refrigerator, etc. These house hold items have become important objects to have in our daily lives. As a result, electricity has also become important in order to accomplish tasks each day.

For example, many who sit at a desk for work usually work with computers. Without electricity to power our devices, we would not be able to turn on our computers to enter and receive information. Time and time again, we realize how much of a necessity it is when the power goes out in the neighborhood, town, city, or wherever. Nonetheless, the outcome is still the same. We, as people have grown to have electricity all around us, for the most part.

Understanding how electricity works is simple and yet complex. Thankfully, schools do address electricity through science classes so that we all may have basic knowledge of the electricity and its potential dangers, as well.

Did You Know?!

  • The 1st power plant was opened in 1882 in New York City and was owned by Thomas Edison.
  • Electricity travels at the speed of light (more than 300,000 kilometers per second!)
  • When an electric charge builds up on the surface of an object it creates static electricity.
  • If you had a light bulb on the moon connected to a switch in your bedroom, it would take only 1.26 seconds for that bulb to light up, 238,857 miles away.
  • If you traveled as fast as electricity, you could go around the world 8 times in the time it takes to turn on a light switch!
